It's been a couple weeks since I finished the new Tomb Raider game, but since I'm following a couple of Tomb Raider groups on DA I just can't get away from it.
One of the biggest faults I have with this game is how dull the character is. This is a prime example of how a push toward "realism" is killing gaming.
The original Lara Croft design is very distinct. I'm not talking about her proportions, although that does play some little part. I mean the other physical aspects: her trademark dual pistols (which get a laughable nod in the new game's finale), her impossible ponytail, even the style and color of her clothes was unique.
What about the new Lara? Honestly she could be any dark haired college girl in a tank top. Now the argument could be made that this was the purpose of the design, to make you feel that she was the "every-girl". That is NOT the point of a solid video game character and certainly NOT who Lara Croft is supposed to be! Even Nathan Drake has a personality that is distinctly Nathan Drake. The new Lara is so "this could be anybody" that she looses any hint of characterization that would actually make the gamer care about her.
The more I think about it the more thoroughly disappointed I am with this game.
